The death anniversary of the Nguyen The family (Loc An village, An Thuy commune, Le Thuy district, Quang Binh province (old), now Le Thuy commune, Quang Tri province) this year seemed to have more descendants attending and the atmosphere was more sacred and emotional. On this occasion, the descendants of the family held a book launch ceremony "Famous person Nguyen The Truc and the Encyclopedia of Poetry" (published by the Pedagogical University Publishing House in July 2025) so that future generations could clearly understand the achievements of their ancestors, spreading the spirit of studiousness, patriotism, and love for the homeland.
Nguyen The clan leader, Doctor of History Nguyen The Hoan said: “Nguyen The Truc (1745 - 1807), also known as Nguyen Viet Truc, is the 8th generation ancestor of the Nguyen The clan in Loc An village. As descendants, we are extremely proud of his qualities and contributions to our homeland and country. He is truly an example of loyalty to the king, dedication to the country, and wholehearted service to all three dynasties (Lord Nguyen - Tay Son - Nguyen).
“ Su trinh thi tap” (1793) by Nguyen The Truc is considered one of the typical Vietnamese diplomatic poems of this period. However, the fate of the poetry collection is very special with many doubts surrounding the real author, leading to reservations in the process of researching and exploiting the value of the poetry collection. The story of finding the author for “Su trinh thi tap” is a long process full of efforts by Professor Tran Ich Nguyen and his colleagues, along with the opportunity with Dr. Tran Thi Xuan (University of Hamburg, Germany), Dr. Nguyen Thi Tam Hanh (Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts in Hue City).
In July 2023, Professor Tran Ich Nguyen and his colleagues went to Le Thuy (old) to visit the tomb of the famous person Nguyen The Truc and presented a copy of "Su trinh thi tap" to the head of the Nguyen The family - Dr. Nguyen The Hoan. In July 2024, the book "Su trinh thi tap of Nguyen The Truc and family history" edited by Professor Tran Ich Nguyen was published by Lac Hoc Thu Cuc in Taiwan.
And on the occasion of the 2024 Ancestor's death anniversary, the book was respectfully offered by the professor's colleagues to the ancestors of the Nguyen The family and the famous Nguyen The Truc. However, "Su trinh thi tap" is a Chinese work, without an accurate Vietnamese translation, it would be very difficult to understand the dignity and thoughts of the Tay Son envoy.
The book “Danh nhan Nguyen The Truc va Su trinh thi tap” was edited by Prof. Tran Ich Nguyen, translated by Dr. Le Phuong Duy and Dr. Phan Thi Thu Hien, introduced and edited by Associate Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Bang Thanh. Descendants of the Nguyen The family, along with translators Han Vu Thuy and Tran Le Van, translated the poems. The appendix is a copy of “Su trinh thi tap” coded A.1123, currently stored at the Library of the Institute of Han Nom Studies to provide materials for researchers.
Dr. Trang Thu Quan - a colleague of Prof. Tran Ich Nguyen from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan - said: Over the past 30 years, Prof. Tran Ich Nguyen has collaborated with Vietnamese scholars and research institutions to publish and research Vietnamese Chinese documents. The book "Danh nhan Nguyen The Truc va Su trinh thi tap" has opened a new direction of cooperation between Vietnamese and Taiwanese (China) researchers to publish, research and translate the poems of Vietnamese envoys. In the coming years, it is hoped that similar works researching the journey of the envoys, translating and annotating the poems of other envoys will continue to be published in Taiwan and Vietnam. |
It can be said that this is a very meaningful cooperation project not only between domestic researchers, but also foreign researchers, opening a new direction in the connection and cooperation in literary research in particular, and in the fields of science and humanities in general. And we must mention the active support and companionship in both spirit and finance of the Nguyen The family in the journey of bringing the heritage of our ancestors back to our homeland, demonstrating responsibility and affection for our ancestors.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thi Bang Thanh in the book's introduction, Professor Tran Ich Nguyen's discovery has provided literary historians, researchers and readers with a "new face" in the Tay Son period's diplomatic poetry. Although the collection of poems does not have a large number of poems, it has added a unique poetic voice to the Tay Son literary achievements. Thereby preserving data that contributes to the study of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and China during the Tay Son period, while historical data on this period is very lacking.
According to the descendant of the Nguyen The family - journalist Nguyen The Thinh, former Head of the Thanh Nien Newspaper representative office in the Central region, the book "The famous person Nguyen The Truc and the Envoy's Poetry Collection" will help young people learn many things from the life of the famous person and his poetic works. Learning from him, a mandarin through three dynasties was respected, talented, tolerant, upright... And many poems from "The Envoy's Poetry Collection" have demonstrated the love for his homeland and country of the famous person Nguyen The Truc, because on his long journey as an envoy, he always yearned for his homeland. Those stories continue to be sent by journalist Nguyen The Thinh to young people in journalism and communication classes where he is a guest lecturer.
