On the afternoon of September 24, despite the heavy rain, the monks of Ro Pagoda and the people went to the fields to participate in the rice planting festival to celebrate Sene Dolta (ancestor worship ceremony). This is a traditional agricultural cultural activity with a high sense of community.
The rice field of more than 2,000 square meters behind the Ro Pagoda campus is being planted and cared for by monks and locals, waiting for harvest.
The Sene Dolta Festival of the Khmer people in the South is closely related to the cycle of rice cultivation, one crop a year. Starting around the 4th lunar month is sowing seeds, in the 8th lunar month is planting seedlings, and in the 10th lunar month is harvesting rice and bringing it home.
According to Dan Tri reporter, although the afternoon rain was quite heavy, the monks of Ro pagoda were still enthusiastically planting bundles of rice seedlings in the fields.
Normally, the eighth lunar month falls in the rainy season, farmers must pray for favorable weather and good rice crops to bring them a bountiful harvest.
The abbot of Ro Chau Soc Khonl Pagoda also went to the fields to participate in the rice planting festival. "In addition to praying for favorable weather for a bountiful harvest, the rice planting festival is also an opportunity for the locals and the pagoda monks to bond with each other. This is also a long-standing tradition of the Khmer people," said abbot Chau Soc Khonl.
Over time, the Sene Dolta rice planting festival has not only become an activity with unique cultural and customary values of the Khmer people, but also a common joy for all people living in the area.
Some people also braved the rain to join the rice planting festival. Ms. Neng Tut (53 years old) shared: "Every year we come to Ro Pagoda to join the rice planting festival. This is also an opportunity for us to meet, chat and bond together more."
It is known that the type of seed sown into seedlings is a typical type of seed of the Khmer people, the time for each crop is from 4-5 months.
Ms. Neng Doanh (77 years old) was excited to participate in the rice planting festival at Ro Pagoda in 2023. She said that since she was young, she has participated in the rice planting festival to celebrate Sene Dolta.
"I don't remember exactly how many years I have participated in the rice planting festival, but I will participate until I am too old to have the strength anymore because this is a traditional feature of our Khmer people," Ms. Neng Doanh shared.
Some children seemed quite excited, playing with bundles of young rice seedlings in the rain.
Previously, on the morning of September 24, the 9th Ro Pagoda Bull Racing Festival also took place with the participation of 26 pairs of bulls from Tinh Bien town and Tri Ton district, An Giang province. This is also one of the activities to celebrate Sene Dolta.
The bull racing festival is not simply about pairs of bulls racing against each other, but it has become a unique custom and belief of the Khmer people.
