On the fields of Quang Dien and Dan Dien communes |
June is the peak of summer, but this year, along with other localities in Hue City, people in Quang Dien and Dan Dien suddenly suffered a prolonged heavy rain causing widespread flooding. According to statistics, more than 3,700 hectares of rice and nearly 650 hectares of crops were affected, mainly beans, peanuts, chili, eggplant, cassava and short-term vegetables.
Immediately after the flood receded, the authorities of Quang Dien and Dan Dien communes and cooperatives went to the area, assigned technical support staff to help people improve the land, guide the selection of short-term varieties, and develop plans to "run the crop".
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Tien, Chairman of Dan Dien Commune People's Committee said: "We mobilized all forces to help people clean their fields, pump and drain water and distribute seeds in a timely manner. Thanks to that, nearly 80% of the rice and crop areas have been re-sown, and in many places the plants have taken root and grown well."
“Currently, the rice area is in the panicle formation stage. The area affected by the flood in June had to be replanted and is in the tillering stage. Overall, the rice plants are growing and developing well. Rice growers have also sprayed pesticides to prevent leaf rollers,” said Mr. Le Van Quang in Khuong Pho Nam village, old Sia town.
Now, walking on the fields of Quang Dien and Dan Dien communes, the traces of the recent flood are gradually fading away by the lush green of the rice. Along with the rice, many vegetable areas have also turned green. The sound of water pumps mixed with the voices of farmers calling each other in the fields. All create a vivid picture. On the vegetable beds in the high mounds, farmers are busy hoeing, pruning leaves, preparing for early harvests.
Quang Dien and Dan Dien are low-lying, riverside areas that are very sensitive to weather factors. Therefore, it is necessary to invest heavily in internal irrigation systems, such as drainage canals, regulating culverts, and spillways to minimize damage when there is unusually heavy rain.
Converting crop varieties to adapt to climate change is also an urgent requirement that needs to be calculated more carefully and reasonably. Flood-resistant rice varieties, short-term crops, and flexible crop rotation will also help reduce risks. Continue to promote organic and ecological agricultural production models, which are both sustainable and increase the value of agricultural products, ensuring income for farmers even when output is affected.
Although there are still difficulties, with determination and hard work, people in Quang Dien and Dan Dien communes as well as many other communes and wards in the area do not leave their land vacant, with the hope of having a bumper crop.
