The National Assembly dismissed Mr. Vo Van Thuong from the position of President.

On the morning of March 21, National Assembly Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue chaired the 6th extraordinary session of the 15th National Assembly to review personnel work under the authority of the National Assembly.

At the session, the National Assembly listened to Permanent Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man present the report of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the dismissal of the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 term and the termination of the duties of a deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

Mr. Vo Van Thuong was born in 1970, is a key leader of the Party and State, received basic training, matured from the grassroots, and was assigned to hold many important leadership positions of the Party and State.

However, according to the recent report of the Central Inspection Committee and the authorities, he violated the Regulations on what party members are not allowed to do, the Regulations on the exemplary responsibility of cadres and party members, first of all, members of the Politburo, members of the Secretariat, members of the Central Executive Committee of the Party and is responsible as a leader according to the Party's regulations and the State's laws.

Fully aware of his responsibility to the Party, State and people, Mr. Vo Van Thuong submitted a request to resign from his assigned positions and retire.

After listening to Mr. Vo Van Thuong's speech, National Assembly delegates discussed in groups the report of the National Assembly Standing Committee.

Next, the National Assembly deputies held a secret ballot and voted to pass a Resolution on the dismissal of Mr. Vo Van Thuong from the position of President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam for the 2021-2026 term and the termination of his duties as a deputy of the 15th National Assembly.

According to Clause 5, Article 88 of the Constitution, the President holds the position of Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council. Therefore, when the National Assembly dismisses the position of President, of course, Mr. Vo Van Thuong also resigns the position of Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council.

Previously, on the afternoon of March 20, the 13th Party Central Committee met to consider and give opinions on the dismissal of Mr. Vo Van Thuong from his positions and work.

Accordingly, the Party Central Committee agreed to let Mr. Vo Van Thuong cease to hold the positions of Politburo member, member of the 13th Party Central Committee, President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Chairman of the National Defense and Security Council for the 2021-2026 term.

According to Article 93 of the Constitution, when the President is unable to work for a long period of time, the Vice President shall act as President. In case of vacancy of the President, the Vice President shall act as President until the National Assembly elects a new President.

Currently, the Vice President is Ms. Vo Thi Anh Xuan.
