AFP on December 7 quoted the fire department of The Hague city as saying that units were busy rescuing and searching for people inside the exploded apartment building, while stepping up fire fighting.

It is unclear how many people were in the apartment building at the time of the explosion, how many people were affected, and what caused the incident.

According to local news site Regio15, several people were taken away from the scene.

Several apartments on the upper floors were destroyed after the explosion, according to Regio15.

AFP news agency reported debris scattered everywhere, some windows were blown out.

Initial images on NOS showed dozens of fire engines battling the blaze, and firefighters smashing doors to get inside the apartment building.

The apartment building that exploded was not far from the city center. The incident attracted attention because the city is home to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

It is the court responsible for prosecuting and trying individuals accused of committing the most serious international crimes, including war crimes, genocide, and crimes against humanity.

The most recent head of state to have an arrest warrant issued by the ICC was Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of war crimes in the conflict with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
