Nguyen Huy Hoang exceeded Olympic B standard, unfortunately missed the medal

Vietnam’s hopes of winning a medal on September 26 rest on the shoulders of swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang. This swimmer has not been in his best form but is still in the medal group in Asia.

Entering his 1,500 meter freestyle event, Nguyen Huy Hoang temporarily ranked 6/8 after the first 500 meters. Athletes from China, Korea and Japan competed for the top 3 positions.

After the next 300 meters, Nguyen Huy Hoang passed his Japanese opponent to move up to third place. Huy Hoang was still more than 4 seconds behind the leader. However, in the final stretch, Huy Hoang could no longer maintain his speed.

This athlete was overtaken by Takeda Shogo (Japan) in the last 100m and missed the bronze medal. Huy Hoang's result was 15 minutes 04.06 seconds, faster than the 32nd SEA Games but still a few seconds behind his personal record as well as the achievement he achieved at the 18th ASIAD.

In the end, Li Weifei (China) won the gold medal with a time of 14 minutes 55 seconds 47, Kim Woo-min (Korea) won the silver medal with a time of 15 minutes 01 seconds 47, and Takeda Shogo (Japan) won the bronze medal with a time of 15 minutes 03 seconds 29.

However, the result of 15 minutes 04 seconds 06 helped Nguyen Huy Hoang reach the Olympic B standard in this event. The Olympic B standard in swimming is for athletes who have achieved results within the threshold allowed to participate in the Olympic qualifying competitions, or are on the waiting list to continue to be considered from high to low until there are enough athletes participating in that sport or event.

Also on September 26, two Vietnamese swimmers, Nguyen Quang Thuan and Tran Hung Nguyen, competed in the final of the men's 400m medley. They finished in the last two places, without any medals. In this event, two Japanese athletes (Honda Tomoru - gold medal and Seto Daiya - silver medal) were completely superior to the rest. Even Olympic champion and ASIAD 19 torchlighter Wang Shun was left far behind.
