Australian Readers' Home

Reading is one of the most popular leisure activities for many Australians. To provide more experiences for people, Australia has built and strengthened the library system, with the spirit of "library growing with the country".

In Australia, libraries are divided into several levels, including national libraries, state libraries, regional public libraries and school libraries. Australia now has an impressive library system with a wide range of functions and activities. Each city or regional council has its own library.

The main activities of the library are usually providing books, newspapers, magazines, audio documents, videos , digital documents, with free wifi. The library also has programs and events such as: organizing English classes, drawing classes, cultural programs... Books in the library are in many languages. Readers can borrow books to read for up to 5 weeks.

Many public libraries in Australia are transforming into multi-purpose centres. In addition to being places to store and provide books, documents, tapes, etc., libraries are also becoming meeting places, helping to connect people, support communities and develop culture and education . With the cost of childcare and daily living costs rising, many parents are increasingly looking to use free library services. The number of people booking storytimes for toddlers has skyrocketed.

Another form of “open” library that is also being welcomed by Australians is the 24/7 library. Readers can use the library at any time of the day and every day of the week, instead of just using it during office hours. Members can check out books under the supervision of a camera system. Foster is the first 24/7 community library in Victoria, serving a community of about 1,000 people in the town of Foster.

Many libraries, especially in multicultural areas, such as the Lionel Bowen Library in New South Wales, also have programs for newly arrived migrants, such as helping them learn English, connect with the community and learn about Australian life. Many English teachers volunteer at libraries to teach English to new migrants, helping them connect with each other, become more confident in communicating in English and quickly integrate into the community.

To maintain and develop a reading culture, the Australian Government has implemented many initiatives: reading promotion programs in schools, campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of reading. In addition to the national and public library system, many charity bookcases are arranged on the streets and in front of school gates. Book donation activities also play an important role, creating a network of community knowledge sharing across Australia. This is not only a way to reuse books, but also a means to spread the joy of reading to everyone.

For Australians, libraries are one of the few places where they can truly be themselves and one of the most inclusive spaces in society. Here, everyone is welcome, supported and encouraged to share their passion for reading; and above all, libraries are a place to bond in a multicultural community.
