Implementing the goal of transforming the economic structure towards increasing the proportion of goods and services in ethnic minority areas according to (Project 3) in the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minorities and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period, Son La province has transformed the economic structure, applied science and technology to improve productivity. The whole province of Son La currently has 48 honey beekeeping associations, with more than 2,100 members; there are 7 cooperatives, honey production and trading establishments. Honey beekeeping households have applied the method of raising bees in next boxes (ie from the main bee box, another layer is added).

This method has many advantages over traditional beekeeping in single boxes. Because beekeeping is done in successive boxes, the bee colony grows quickly, so the honey yield is high; the water content is below 20%. When harvesting honey, the beekeeper only needs to take out the nests in the successive layers without affecting the egg-laying activities of the queen bee and the larvae rearing of the worker bees on the ground floor. Thanks to that, the honey is more delicious than the traditional beekeeping method.

In 2014, Son La honey was granted a Collective Trademark Certificate by the Department of Intellectual Property; in 2019, honey products of a number of production facilities and farming households were recognized as OCOP products with 3 stars or more.
