In the last three World Cups, the Australian women's team has lost its opening match. Therefore, Australian fans expressed concern before the ball rolled in the opening match against the Republic of Ireland in Group B, Women's World Cup 2023.

After the opening whistle, the home team pushed up their attack, controlling the ball up to 81% in the first 15 minutes of the match. However, the Republic of Ireland's solid and disciplined defense helped the team draw 0-0 in the first half.

In the second half, the Australian women's team continued to dominate the attack and their efforts were rewarded in the 53rd minute. Republic of Ireland player Marissa Sheva fouled Hayley Raso in the home team's penalty area. After reviewing the VAR technology, the referee awarded the Australian women's team a penalty. At the 11m mark, Steph Catley did not miss the opportunity to open the score for the home team.

After conceding the goal, the Republic of Ireland women's team tried to push up their formation to find opportunities but it was not easy to carry out their intention. In the final minutes of the match, Australia even retreated deep, accepting to play half the field to preserve the minimal 1-0 victory. With the above result, the Australian women's team temporarily rose to the top of Group B.

The match between the Australian women's team and the Republic of Ireland women's team, 1-0, was attended by more than 75,000 fans, a record for Australian women's football.
