Fixed Internet speeds, mostly fiber optic, continued to rise, rising to 13th in the world in July.

Statistics released by Ookla, the company behind the Speedtest tool, show that Vietnam is one of the markets witnessing the most impressive growth in fixed-line Internet, with many consecutive months of increase in both speed and ranking.

As of July, the domestic fixed network reached 250.45 Mbps, ranking 13th in the global rankings. Meanwhile, in March, Vietnam's speed only reached 173.6 Mbps, ranking 33rd.

Vietnam's fixed Internet speed, according to Ookla Speedtest statistics, has continuously increased, reaching more than 250 Mbps, ranking 13th globally. Screenshot

Vietnam fixed internet speed according to Ookla Speedtest.

The results put Vietnam's fixed network speed on par with Israel (251.57 Mbps), almost catching up with Thailand (256.15 Mbps, ranked 10th) and above many countries such as Switzerland, Denmark, and China. Meanwhile, Singapore still leads the global fixed network, with a speed of 386.96 Mbps.

With this progress, for the first time, Vietnam has both mobile and fixed networks in the top 20 global markets in terms of speed. With mobile Internet, the speed reached 151.69, ranking 18th.

The growth is also similar to the measurement results on the iSpeed system of the Vietnam Internet Center. Since February, fixed Internet in Vietnam has been continuously increasing, from under 100 Mbps to 271.2 Mbps in August. Of which, Viettel reached the highest with 381.71 Mbps.

Nearly 30 years since the Internet entered Vietnam, this is the highest speed Vietnam has achieved, approaching the top 10 in the world . According to experts, the growth comes from many factors, including the addition of submarine fiber optic cable infrastructure, land fiber optic cable, and upgrades in domestic connection infrastructure of network operators.

"Network operators have increased investment in infrastructure, fiber optic networks and service quality. Many new technologies have been deployed such as GPON, XGS-PON, Wi-Fi 6, Wi-Fi 7, allowing download and upload bandwidth to be increased many times compared to before," said Mr. Vu Duc Huy, representative ofFPT network.

In addition, since April, many network operators such as VNPT, FPT, Viettel have raised their fixed Internet packages to a new "floor" level of 300 Mbps, helping home users access high speeds at reasonable costs. Some units such as VNPT and FPT also provide XGS-PON modem equipment with a maximum speed of 10 Gbps. "This has helped the general level of the fixed Internet market in Vietnam improve significantly in recent times," said Mr. Huy.

During a working session with the Telecommunications sector of the Ministry of Science and Technology in July, Minister Nguyen Manh Hung repeatedly emphasized that telecommunications infrastructure is "national strategic infrastructure", and is of equal importance to transportation and electricity, and requested units to set a goal of "top 5, top 10" in the world.

Under his leadership, along with the launch of the digital infrastructure strategy, Vietnam's telecommunications infrastructure has grown continuously in recent times. Vietnam currently has six submarine optical cable lines including AAG, IA, AAE-1, APG, ADC, SJC2, with a total designed capacity of 80 Tbps, of which two lines ADC and SJC2 have just been put into operation. In addition, this year also marks the first time Vietnam has mastered the VSTN land optical cable line with a total designed capacity of 4 Tbps, which can be expanded to 12 Tbps.

According to the report of the Telecommunications Department in the first half of 2025, the fixed broadband subscription rate in Vietnam reached 24.4/100 people, an increase of 3.9% over the same period. The rate of households using fiber optic cable reached 85.3%, an increase of 3.4% and higher than the world average (60%).

Resolution 57 sets the goal that by 2030, Vietnam will have an advanced, modern digital technology infrastructure with super-large capacity and super-wide bandwidth on par with developed countries. To realize this, the Ministry of Science and Technology sets the goal that by 2030, Vietnam will have 15 international submarine fiber optic cable lines with a design capacity of 350 Tbps, of which two lines are owned by Vietnam, along with two international land fiber optic cable lines; 100% of users will be able to access at a speed of 1 Gbps.
