The Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies has completed a draft project to convert 400,000 gasoline-powered motorbikes to electric ones. MSc. Le Thanh Hai, Director of the Center for Economic Application Consulting - Ho Chi Minh City Institute for Development Studies, said that Ho Chi Minh City only has about 400,000 gasoline-powered motorbikes serving passengers and delivering goods via technology platforms.
This is a group of people who travel 80 - 120 km/day, much higher than motorbikes for personal use, with a high emission rate. In addition, switching from gasoline to electric vehicles will help drivers save on fuel and maintenance costs. On average, each vehicle can save 1 - 1.3 million VND/month.
According to the research team, converting 400,000 motorbikes of technology drivers to electric vehicles is a strategic step, with profound impacts on many aspects such as human resources, supply chains and urban infrastructure. Therefore, a clear and strong legal corridor is needed to ensure responsibility and synchronous coordination between the government, technology transport enterprises, manufacturers and the driver team.
