Hilly land gives sweet fruit

On the steep hillsides that were previously used to grow corn, cassava, soybeans, etc., many households in the highlands of Bat Xat district have introduced VH6 pear trees - a temperate fruit tree variety that is suitable for the climate and soil. The bold conversion has "awakened" the potential of the hilly land, opened up an effective economic development direction, gradually forming a commodity production area and providing sweet fruit seasons.

In previous years, on the farm of Ms. Ly Gi Su’s family (Kin Chu Phin 2 village, Nam Pung commune), they mainly grew corn and soybeans. Despite working hard all year round, her family’s income was always unstable, and life was often lacking. When the local government encouraged her to switch crops and provided her with seeds and techniques, Ms. Su boldly experimented with growing VH6 pear trees.

Ms. Ly Gi Su shared: At first, I was worried because VH6 is a perennial tree, it requires a lot of investment, and it is a trial planting so I have no experience. However, after that, the commune officials encouraged and guided me on how to plant, fertilize, vine branches, create canopy, and wrap fruit, so I felt secure in planting. Last season, 100 pear trees bore fruit, and I sold the fruit for nearly 40 million VND. This year, there are more fruits, and I hope to earn double that. My family has also just planted 200 more pear trees on the remaining cornfield with the hope of having a higher income in the near future, helping the family stabilize their lives.

Not only Ms. Su's family, many other households in Nam Pung have also converted corn-growing land to growing VH6 pears. Typically, Ms. Tan Ta May's family in Kin Chu Phin 1 village currently grows more than 1.5 hectares of VH6 pears, earning hundreds of millions of VND each year; Ms. Tan Lo May's family in the same village grows nearly 1 hectare, earning more than 40 million VND each year. Up to now, Nam Pung commune has more than 176 hectares of VH6 pears, of which nearly half of the area has been harvested stably.

Determining to develop pear trees in the direction of commodities, Nam Pung commune has advocated and oriented the establishment of cooperatives and cooperatives to support techniques, output and promote products, including the Nam Pung Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative which was soon established.

Nam Pung Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative currently has more than 20 members. Mr. Ly Di Go, Director of the Cooperative, shared: “We guide people to take care of pear trees according to clean processes, without using herbicides, prioritizing microbial fertilizers to protect the soil and produce good quality fruit, beautiful appearance to better access the market. Although growing pear trees requires a lot of care, the results are obvious, and people's income is increasing day by day.”

On average, 1 hectare of VH6 pear trees has about 400 trees, with a yield of 30 - 50 kg of fruit/tree, the selling price fluctuates around 30,000 - 50,000 VND/kg, bringing in an income of 300 - 400 million VND/year, 2 - 3 times higher than growing corn or upland rice before.

Not only in Nam Pung, the VH6 pear growing model is being replicated in many other highland communes such as Pa Cheo, Y Ty, A Lu, Den Thang, Sang Ma Sao... Up to now, Bat Xat district has planted 388 hectares of pears, of which about 130 hectares have entered the commercial period, with an estimated output of more than 320 tons per year. Notably, most of this area has been converted from low-efficiency corn and upland rice land.

To develop pear trees sustainably, Bat Xat district has implemented many synchronous solutions such as planning planting areas, investing in drip irrigation systems, building water tanks in key areas, organizing technical training, and supporting seeds and fertilizers for households. Every year, the district organizes a pear festival in Nam Pung to honor local products, promote the image, and at the same time bring products to e-commerce platforms to reach more consumers.

From the sloping land that is only familiar with short-term, low-efficiency crops, VH6 pear trees have opened up a new direction for agricultural development in the highland communes of Bat Xat district. The successful conversion of crop varieties not only helps increase income and improve people's lives but also contributes to the formation of commodity production areas and the building of local agricultural product brands. This is a suitable and sustainable development direction that needs to continue to be expanded and invested in synchronously in the coming time.
