Coach Amorim is not satisfied with MU's playing pace. |
The Red Devils scored 44 goals in the Premier League last season - a record low for a team with great ambitions. The match on 19 July continued to expose the limitations of the attack, despite the debut of new signing Matheus Cunha after a £62.5 million deal from Wolves.
Cunha is deployed on the left as an attacking midfielder, with Bruno Fernandes playing deeper - a combination Amorim admits is still not perfected. The upcoming arrival of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford is expected to bring pace and dynamism to the attack.
“We lacked pace, especially in midfield, which made it difficult to build up the ball,” Amorim told MUTV. “We created chances, but there is clearly a lot of work to do. It was only the first test against a Premier League opponent, and it was a good test.”
Commenting on new signing Cunha, Amorim said: “He shows what we need – a player who plays between the lines with intensity. The link-up between Cunha and Bruno Fernandes is not really clear yet, but I believe it will improve. We also have other options like Kobbie Mainoo or Mason Mount. It is a matter of improving the quality in the final third.”
Man United will continue their friendly tour in the US, meeting West Ham, Bournemouth and Everton from July 26 to August 3, before returning to Old Trafford to face Fiorentina on August 9.
“We need to build cohesion, not only between the players but also the coaching staff. Everything needs to be stable, and the team needs to increase the speed, improve every little detail,” Amorim emphasized.
